  • Career – Perspective for Researcher

    Last month we tried to understand ‘Why to be a scientist’ & mentioned some advantages. Let’s know in-depth perspective about becoming a researcher.

    First and foremost mention must be made about the Ph.Ds. It is not at all a degree as most think…same is about M.Phil…however in every educational institutes for the teaching purposes M.Phil and Ph.Ds are required qualifications to teach either at Senior Colleges or at University Departments. In a lighter note I always say that if you don’t have Ph.D, don’t even knock the doors of any Educational Institute to become a Professor or Principal….

    Research

    As seen, if you don’t have Ph.D never try to enter any University Campus. So you will understand obviously these are the qualifications required for teaching purposes…but not for the research needed for society or industry or for the entire humanity.

    To maintain the academic ratings of the Universities all Professors are required to write and publish research work periodically and it is now made almost mandetory…but accept that such publications are coming out to be just a peripheral documentation of work done by various students who are pursuing Ph.D’s under the guidance of Professor. Take it with the pinch of salt as it may hurt many in the teaching profession…and same is the situation in the Agricultural field too.

    Research Institutes

    In India the major research work is done in Research Institutions like TIFR, IISC, ISRO, IISER, NCL, Virology Institute, IIUCA, BARC, APL, ICT Mumbai etc. These are just a few names known to the common man. There are many institutions which are unknown to many that include various industrial R&D departments of particularly Pharma Industry. About the Pharma research I would like to bring out the fact that huge fund is necessary to come out with a new molecules useful for treating diseases. Cost incurred for such research is usually in multiples of crores. You must have heard the vaccine stories all over the world and also the success stories of Serum Institute of India & Bharat Biotech.

    Skills Required

    To be a Researcher, just Studying & getting in depth knowledge of your subject is not sufficient to be a good researcher. One must be acquainted with other necessary skill like Maths & Statistics. Handling of big data, knowledge of basic languages of computer programming and continuous updating of global trends in research, as well as the technology evolving in various fields should be the inherent part of the daily ritual of a researcher.

    The continuous learning ability is the right way of life of a scientist. In the process some proud moments are always in waiting. In India for young scientists, several encouraging awards like Bhatnagar prize is a very prestigious encouragement for the further development career. International recognition comes when your research paper is published in International Journals of repute, like Nature. The aptitude and hard work results in recognition…

    Research – the way of life

    There is always a misconception in the minds of even senior learned executives, managers, or even CEO’s of various companies that to be a scientist is only to deal with research and development . Obviously most think that a scientists are needed only for the purpose of developing production process or Industrial Technology…

    Research is an entirely different process. Very logical, very creative, in technical terms it is called lateral thinking or divergent thinking…That is the reason for all over the world research labs are Independently working entities but funded by Industries.

    In most of the advanced countries a genuine researcher starts his own lab. maybe in the campus of a University or outside the University…associated with industrial environment…establishing Industry-Academic Interface…Developing the Technology…That is the global trend setting in the Research Arena

    Magic Travelling Flame

    Relighting a candle using its smoke as a flame looks like magic but it’s real science. You may think it’s impossible but we are going to show you a simple trick that will surprise anyone who sees it. You can relight a candle without touching the flame to the wick; only the smoke needs to be touched by the flame. It may seem absurd too you, but it really works and it’s easy, too.

    Material:

    • Candle

    Let’s do it:

    The trick has a little bit of science behind it. When a wick is lit, the flame vaporizes the candle wax and turns it into heat and light. As soon as you blow it out, the trail of smoke released by the blazing wick still contains a bit of wax that hasn’t fully burned. When you hold a fire source up to the smoke, they can reignite and flow back down to relight the candle.

    How does it work?

    The smoke from a candle is a very complex material. It actually contains a substance called ‘soot’ which is a black material composed mostly of carbon that comes from burning organic items. In fact, the yellow flame you see on a candle is comprised mainly of burning soot. However, what you don’t see is the blue flame surrounding it in which the temperature can be around 2,500°F (1400°C).

    Another component of the smoke from a candle is unburned wax vapour. This is the material that causes candle wax to appear white or grey. For a few seconds, its temperature is high enough that it will combust (burn) with the touch of a flame. It rises, because it is hot, so you will have to move above the wick to light it. The smoke trail is very straight when the air is still and you can touch the flame to any part of the trail that’s connected to the wick. The wax vapour reignites and the blue flame travels along it to the wick where the candle burning process starts all over.

    WHAT DO WE NEED ?

    Citrus fruits such as lemons, limes or oranges, Copper nails (2 inches in length,) Zinc nail (2 inches in length), Small coloured light bulb / LED light, Electrical tape / alligator clips, Micro ammeter (to measure the electric current in a circuit)

    LET’S GET STARTED..

    1. Soften the fruit by squeezing it on all sides with your hands carefully without breaking its skin so that the juice inside is flowing.
    2. Insert the nails into the fruit in a way that the sharp tips of the nails should be in the center of the fruit and not touching one another. Do not pierce the nail through the opposite end of fruit.
    3. Peel off the insulation around the bulb wires to expose the wire beneath and wrap the exposed wire around the nails.
    4. Wrap the exposed wire around the zinc nail. Use some electrical tape or clips to keep it attached. 5. And now as you wrap the other end of the wire around the copper nail, you will see the bulb light up!

    WHAT DO WE SEE ?

    The zinc nail being an active metal, reacts with the acid in the citrus fruit. The positively charged ions are the active ingredient in the fruit. The electrons transfer between the zinc nail and the acid from the fruit. The nails act as poles of the battery where one is positive while the other is negative. Electrons travel from the positive pole to the negative pole through the light bulb, which acts as a conductor. This generates enough electricity to complete the circuit and light the bulb.

    MAKING A SUN DIAL

    Let’s Try some experiment….

    WHAT DO WE NEED?

    • A straight stick (2ft long)
    • Small sea shells or rocks
    • A watch

    LET’S PROCEED

    • Find a sunny spot. Plant the stick vertically into the ground.
    • We need to begin the experiment early in the morning. Around 7:00 am, use a small rock or seashell to mark where the shadow of the stick falls.
    • At around 8:00 am, 9:00 am, 10:00 am and so on till there is daylight, mark the shadows.
    • You can also mark the pebbles with the time that they were placed using a chalk.
    • By the end of the day, you will complete the sundial.

    HOW DOES IT WORK?

    The sunlight makes the stick cast a shadow. As the earth is constantly rotating and revolving around the sun, the angle of the shadow will change depending on how the sunlight falls on the stick.

    HOW TO MAKE GELATIN BIOPLASTIC?

    Plastic has been a cause for massive global pollution issues. But what if we mix science and some food technology to address the environment concerns with Bioplastic? Let’s explore this with a fun experiment….

    So, what do we need?

    Stove, Pot, spoon, whisk, three gelatine packets, water, food colouring.

    How do we make plastic from gelatine? 

    Add 3 gelatine to 75 ml of water in a pot. Add 2-3 drops of food colouring (optional). Whisk it well over medium low heat until completely mixed. Once the mixture begins to steam, it thickens a bit. At this point, remove it from the heat. Using a spoon, gently scrape off the foamy layer. This will reduce the cloudiness from the plastic formed. Now you get a clear liquid. Pour the formed solution onto a container lid and leave it to cool for about 45 minutes. After cooling, it will have a rubbery consistency material. It can be cut into different shapes and dried for about 2 days to form a hard plastic shape.

    What is the science behind the gelatine plastic?

    This plastic that we have created with gelatine is a form of bioplastic. Basically, gelatine is created by breaking down collagen, which is a long chain of amino acids – the building blocks of proteins. At room temperature, gelatine is solid, but when it is heated, the bonds between the chains loosen, thus allowing them to stretch. Thus when a mixture of gelatine and water is heated, the chains weeken. As it cools down, it traps the water molecules. This gives us a hard plastic instead of a jelly material.
