  • Science Round-up 2022

    Post COVID-19 pandemic as the countries across the globe were coming to terms with the new realities of life, scientists/researchers dedicatedly made incredible discoveries providing use deeper understanding of the secrets of universe by capture images of ancient galaxies, reviving the dead, developing synthetic embryo and capturing images of black hole. The year also saw some mazing technological breakthroughs like simulating the wormhole, successful nuclear fusion, fastest exascale supercomputer and new high-precision navigation system and revolutionary efforts to save humanity from rogue asteroids and make Sanskrit language to be more computer-enabled.

    As we look ahead at what’s going to come in 2023, we have shortlisted top 10 scientific discoveries and technological breakthroughs of the past year as follows… 

    Fastest Supercomputer:

    Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s Frontier, the world’s first exascale supercomputer crunches numbers with mind-blowing speed – 1.1 quintillion or 1018 calculations per second. As of June 2022, Frontier has emerged as the world’s fastest supercomputer with 2.5 times speed of the second ranking Japanese supercomputer – Fugaku. Frontier’s novel architecture is ideally suited for delivering unprecedented machine learning and data science and automations that could vastly improve our understanding of critical processes, from drug delivery to nuclear fusion to the global climate change.

    The James Webb Telescope:

    The Innovation of the year in aerospace technology, the James Webb Telescope (JWST) beamed down the first images in July, showing use jaw-dropping views of the cosmos. Unlike the Hubble space telescope, which scanned the heavens from low Earth orbit, the Webb telescope is camped hundreds of thousands of miles farther out, sitting in Earth’s shadow, where it is permanently blocked from sunlight. As a result, the $10 billion JWST can see deep into fields of forming stars. It can peer 13 billion years back in time at ancient galaxies, still in their nursery. It can teach us about how those stars and galaxies came together from primordial matter, something Hubble could only glimpse.

    Organ Transplant reviving the dead:

    A group of Yale scientists succeeded in reviving cells in the hearts, liver, kidneys and brains of pigs that had been lying dead in a lab for an hour. The researchers accomplished the feat by using a device much like a heart-lung machine to pump a custom-made solution, dubbed OrganEx, into the pigs’ bodies. The pigs’ hearts started beating and sent the solution through their veins. While the pigs weren’t revived, but their organs started functioning again. The researchers hope their breakthrough eventually will help increase the supply of human organs available for transplant by letting doctors get viable organs from bodies long after death. The technology also might be useful in limiting damage to hearts from heart attacks, and to brains from strokes.

    Synthetic embryo made without sperm or eggs:

    After 10 years of research, scientist at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, created a synthetic mouse embryo that began forming organs without a sperm or egg inside a bioreactor. All it took was stem cells. It was the first time scientists ever managed to grow fully synthetic mouse embryos outside the womb. The mouse stem cells were grown into an artificial womb for eight days, where they developed a rudimentary brain, an intestinal tract and a beating heart. The experiment could be key in understanding how organs develop in the embryos and one-day help develop replacement organs for people who need a transplant. However, it also raises profound questions about whether other animals, including humans, might one day be cultured from stem cells in a lab.

    Deflecting Asteroid Collision:

    After 10 months flying in space, NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) – the world’s first planetary defense technology mission has proved that it has the ability to deflect a giant space rock off a collision course with our planet. NASA sent the 1,100-pound DART spacecraft slamming into a 525-foot-diameter asteroid, Dimorphos, at 14,000 miles per hour to see whether the impact force would be enough to change its trajectory. Dimorphos, which didn’t actually threaten Earth, was orbiting around a larger parent asteroid, Didymos, every 11 hours and 55 minutes before the crash. After DART slammed into Dimorphos on Sept. 26, astronomers clocked its orbit time at 11 hours and 23 minutes, 32 minutes shorter than before, signaling a significant change in its path.

    New Navigation System with 10 centimeter accuracy:

    Researcher of Delft University, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and VSL have developed an alternative ‘positioning system’ that is more robust and accurate than the present GPS system and Galileo system. This new technology is important for the implementation of a wide range of advanced location-based applications, including autonomous vehicle, quantum communication and next-gen mobile communication system. For long, the existing positioning systems have been considered to be unreliable in the urban settings owing to their weak signals and inaccurate positioning because radio signals are reflected or blocked by buildings.

    Nuclear fusion:

    Scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California achieved the long-elusive breakthrough in harnessing the process that fuels the sun. This milestone moves us one significant step closer to powering our society with zero-carbon fusion energy. Fusion involves pushing together two nuclei of a lightweight element at a colossal speed, forcing them to fuse. The leftover mass is converted into an enormous amount of energy, according to Einstein’s formula E = mc2. The nuclear fusion has the potential to produce limitless, carbon-free energy, displacing fossil fuels and other traditional energy sources. The achievement will pave way for in clean power technology, help tackle climate change and energy security.

    Ancient Grammatical Puzzle Solved After 2,500 Years:

    A grammatical problem that has defeated Sanskrit scholars since the 5th century BC has finally been solved by an Indian PhD student at St John’s College. Rishi Rajpopa made the breakthrough by decoding a rule taught by ‘the father of linguistics’, Paṇini. The discovery makes it possible to ‘derive’ any Sanskrit word – to construct millions of grammatically correct words including ‘mantra’ and ‘guru’ – using Panini’s revered ‘language machine’ which is widely considered to be one of the great intellectual achievements in history. Leading Sanskrit experts have described Rajpopat’s discovery as ‘revolutionary’ and it could now mean that Paṇini’s grammar can be taught to computers for the first time.

    Wormhole created using a Quantum Computer: W

    ormholes are a very common topic when it comes to science fiction. The proper definition of a wormhole is ‘a rupture in space and time’ which is regarded as a ‘bridge between two remote regions in the universe’. While they are not existent in physical space, a group of researchers of the California Institute of Technology claim that they have created the first-ever wormhole, a kind of tunnel theorized in 1935 by Albert Einstein and Nathan Rosen that leads from one place to another by passing into an extra dimension of space. The wormhole emerged like a hologram out of quantum bits of information, or “qubits,” stored in tiny superconducting circuits. By manipulating the qubits, the physicists then sent information through the wormhole.

    First images of black hole in our galaxy:

    Astronomers of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration unveiled the first image of the supermassive black hole at the centre of our Milky Way galaxy. Although, one cannot see the black hole itself, because it is completely dark, glowing gas around reveals a telltale signature: a dark central region surrounded by a bright ring-like structure. The view also captures light bent by the powerful gravity of the black hole, which is four million times more massive than our Sun. The black hole is about 27,000 light-years away from the Earth, and it appears as a donut in the sky.

    Bidding a warm goodbye to 2022, I welcome the new year,
    Bringing along with new dreams, new hopes and new cheer.
    Fleeting through my mind are a million hues
    As I stand and stare at the cosmos for clues.

     

    The setting crimson sun peeps through the white clouds,
    Tiny tweeting birds hop from branch to branch,
    Withering leaves waft away from the trees,
    As rain drops play sonata on the rooftops.

     

    Kitten-black, brown and white jump up and down,
    Crying Meh… Meh… a little Lamb runs through town.
    Children crowding around the candy man,
    Lilting music notes float through the cool fan.

     

    There are zillion and more things to make us happy,
    Let us just Stand and Stare and Smile at the cosmos
    Cos’ in that space beyond the blue planet lie some answers,
    And its loveliness will increase Year after Year after Year!

  • Corona Again??

    Corona is a cause of Concern again as China is battling the sudden surge of Covid infections

    China is reporting unprecedented rise in Covid cases. The numbers are frightening. China has reported 37 million infection in a single day. This current crisis with 37 million cases a day is so far the largest in the world.

    The latest statistics estimates as many as 248 million people, nearly 18 per cent of the Chinese population is likely got infected due to the virus by the end of December and true to this estimate around 25 Cr individuals are reported to have been infected by the Virus. The predictions are that around 1 million Covid cases with around 5000 deaths per day is projected to come.. Experts predict the peak to come within a week which would last for one or two months

    China being our neighbour need immediate attention as per the implementation of the Covid Protocols in the Country. Masks, Testing should be implemented as the precautionary measures.

    India has suffered a lot due to Covid. The paucity of Oxygen, Hospitals should be taken care to combat any eventualities. India has opened up post Covid and the economy is coming back to tract.. The new upsurge in China is certainly a cause of concern.

    The month end Christmas and the upcoming new year celebrations which in our country should be celebrated with precaution.

    As the news trickle in, the surge of Corona is expanding in many countries but for India it is predicted that the wave would be mild because the Indian Vaccines are powerful enough and the population has developed the Immunity.

    Testing, Tracking and the Treatment as a Policy should be implemented are war footing

    Greetings from Science Now Digital….

    Times passes by… this year too is coming to an end…

    Since we launched the mission of ScienceNow Digital, it is over a month and a half now… It is gaining momentum… many of you are giving positive suggestions for what you want to see in the Digital Version of Science Now… We are taking a very positive note of it… and the changes will be seen in the new year issue.. with your input we are revamping the contents.. Now it will be still a more power packed material in the coming months… and that’s the promise!

    As the year comes to an end, the world saw renewed hope of saving our planet earth. COP 27 concluded in Egypt with the declaration on Loss and Damages caused by Climate Change. The new fund will be established to help vulnerable parts of the globe, worst hit by the Climate fury…

    The month will even see the award of Nobel Ceremony… This issue contains special cover story on the Nobel 22 prizes in Science.

    NOBEL ‘22

    The Nobel Prizes are five separate prizes awarded as per the will of Alfred Nobel to those who have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind. 

    Alfred Nobel was a Swedish Chemist, Engineer, and Industrialist most famously known for the invention of Dynamite. He died in 1896. In his will, he bequeathed all of his assets to be used to establish five prizes which became known as “Nobel Prizes.” Nobel Prizes were first awarded in 1901.

    Nobel Prizes are awarded in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace. In 1968, Sweden’s Central Bank funded the establishment of the Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel….

    Nobel Prizes ‘22

    The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced 2022 Nobel Prizes. 

    Nobel Prize, one of the world’s top honours, has been declared for the year 2022 in designated Science categories such as Medicine, Physics and Chemistry.

    The announcement of Nobel Prize winners is one of the most awaited moments for people associated with fields ranging from Literature to Science, here is a look at this year’s winners…

    Nobel-Physiology and Medicine:

    The Nobel Prize 2022 in Physiology and Medicine is awarded for discoveries concerning the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution.

    The Nobel laureate has established an entirely new scientific discipline called Paleogenomics. The discoveries revealed genetic differences that distinguish all living humans from extinct hominins, and provide the basis for exploring what makes us uniquely human.

    The Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine 2022 is awarded to Svante Paabo for his discoveries concerning the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution”

    Nobel-Physics:

    Nobel Prize in Physics is jointly shared for experiments with entangled photons, establishing the violation of Bell inequalities and pioneering quantum information science. 

    The Nobel laureates have conducted ground breaking experiments using entangled quantum states, where two particles behave like a single unit even when they are separated. 

    The Nobel Prize for Physics 2022 is awarded jointly to three sicientists, Alain Aspect for experiments with entangled photons, establishing the violation of Bell inequalities and pioneering quantum information science, John Caluser for experiments with entangled photons, establishing the violation of Bell inequalities and pioneering quantum information science and Anton Zeilinger for experiments with entangled photons, establishing the violation of Bell inequalities and pioneering quantum information science”

    Nobel-Chemistry:

    The Nobel Prize 2022 in Chemistry is awarded for the development of Click Chemistry and Bioorthogonal Chemistry. The Nobel laureates had worked on click chemistry and bioorthogonal reactions. Click chemistry is utilised in the development of pharmaceuticals, for mapping DNA and creating materials that are more fit for purpose, while bioorthogonal reactions have helped researchers improve the targeting of cancer pharmaceuticals.

    The Nobel Prize for Chemistry 2022 is awarded jointly to Carolyn Bertozzi for the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry, Morten Meldal for the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry and K Barry Sharpless for the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry.

    The Nobel Foundation has announced that laureates will receive their prize medals in Stockholm in December after Covid induced interruption of two years. Winners from 2020 and 2021 will also be invited to attend the ceremony.

    COP-27: Loss and Damage Funding

    COP (Conference of the Parties) is a series of United Nations Climate Change Conferences, which have been running since 1995. COP is the name given to the United Nations Climate Change Conferences. The goal of these conferences is to review progress made by members of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to limit climate change.

    Recent COP27 took place in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt…

    Climate Change Conference

    The United Nations Climate Change Conference COP27 concluded with a breakthrough agreement to provide “loss and damage” funding for vulnerable countries hit hard by climate disasters.

    COP27 brought together more than 45,000 participants to share ideas, solutions, and build partnerships and coalitions. Indigenous peoples, local communities, cities and civil society, including youth and children, showcased how they are addressing climate change and shared how it impacts their lives.

    The United Nation climate Change conference concluded on 20th Nov in Shjarm el-Sheikh,Egypt with a decision to establish and operationalize a fund to compensate vulnerable nations for the ‘Loss and Damage’ from climate change disasters.

    According to the agreement, It will be a decades-long conversation on funding for loss and damage – deliberating over the impacts on communities whose lives and livelihoods have been ruined by the very worst impacts of climate change

    COP27 reaffirmed commitment to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The agreement also emphasises to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

    Creating a specific fund for loss and damage marked an important point of progress, with the issue added to the official agenda and adopted for the first time at COP27.

    Implementation Plan
    The Sharm el-Sheikh Implementation Plan, highlights that a global transformation to a low-carbon economy is expected to require investments of at least USD 4-6 trillion a year.

    At COP27, deliberations continued on setting a ‘new collective quantified goal on climate finance’ in 2024, taking into account the needs and priorities of developing countries. 

    However, Serious concern was expressed that the goal of developed country Parties to mobilize jointly USD 100 billion per year by 2020 has not yet been met.

     Past Actions

    Adopted in 2015, the Paris Agreement was the culmination of the high hopes of limiting global warming preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels in order to avert devastating climate impacts.

    Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of the United Nations published a report suggesting that severe climate impacts could be avoided by limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, but the time to act was closing rapidly.

    Despite that Carbon concentration has jumped from 399.4 ppm in 2015 to 421 ppm in 2022. An increasing number of experts and activists have started to become vocal about how important it is to safeguard the ecosystem and biodiversity rather than prioritising fossil fuel based economic growth. There’s greater understanding that the earth cannot withstand the exploitation of natural resources any further.

    Developing countries will prioritise loss and damage at COP27 adhering to the principle of “polluter pays”. The reparations will be for the losses incurred, primarily to rebuild lives and livelihoods after climate induced disasters.

    The paradox is that efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit global temperature below 1.5 degrees Celsius should go hand in hand. Large emitters haven’t demonstrated great enthusiasm and drive in cutting emissions as rapidly as required, developing countries’ increased focus on loss and damage is likely to dilute the issue further.

    Thus, we mustn’t be surprised when emissions don’t fall as needed to avert the climate emergency. As far as paying for loss and damage is concerned, we need to remember that despite their promises, developed countries haven’t committed new and additional funds to developing countries to help them deal with climate change. There’s a good chance that the issue of who pays for climate impacts may once again be recognised but not committed to.

    Hope

    There’s growing consensus that not much time is left to bring about meaningful reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Net zero to halt global warming is still within our grasp if we work swiftly by concentrating our actions around the climate crisis.

    It was concluded that world is in a critical decade for climate action. According to the report, implementation of current pledges by national governments put the world on track for a 2.5°C warmer world by the end of the century. The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change indicates that greenhouse gas emissions must decline 45% by 2030 to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

    Know the Genius – Thomas Alva Edison

    Thomas Alva Edison was born on February 11, 1847 in Milan, Ohio. In 1854, when he was just seven

    years old, the family moved to Michigan where Edison spent the rest of his childhood….

    Early life

    Edison went to school for a brief period and was not good at studies. In fact, his mother, a former

    teacher, had to teach him at home. However, Edison loved reading and also liked to conduct various

    experiments at his home.

    Edison was quite a hardworking boy. At the age of 12 he sold fruit, snacks and newspapers on a train. He even printed his own newspaper, the Grand Trunk Herald, on a moving train. At 15, Edison roamed the country as a tramp telegrapher; Using a kind of alphabet called Morse Code, he sent and received messages over the telegraph. Even though he was losing his hearing, he could still hear the clicks of the telegraph. In the next seven years, he worked taking messages for trains and even for the Union Army during the Civil War. When he had time on his hand, he would take things apart to see how they worked. Finally, he decided to invent things himself.

    The Inventions

    Edison moved from Newark to Menlo Park, New Jersey, in 1876. There he built his most famous

    laboratory. In fact, Edison is sometimes called the Wizard of Menlo Park; because he created two of his three greatest works there:

    • The phonograph was the first machine that was invented by Edison that could record the sound of someonw’s voice and play it back. In 1877, Edison recorded the first words on a piece of tin foil. He recited the nursery rhyme;Mary Had a Little Lamb; and the phonograph played the words back to him.
    • It was in 1878, that Edison worked on one of his greatest achievements – the electric light

    system. Edison also designed a system of power plants that produce electrical power and the wiring that brings it to peoples homes.

    • It was in 1887, Edison built a laboratory in West Orange that was 10 times larger than the one in Menlo Park. In fact, it was one of the largest laboratories in the world, almost as famous as Edison himself. It in West Orange that Edison earned half of his 1,093 patents.

    Beyond Inventions

    But Edison did more than invent. Not only did Edison improve the phonograph several times, but he

    also worked on X-rays, storage batteries, and the first talking doll. At West Orange he also worked on one of his greatest ideas: motion pictures or movies. The inventions made here changed the way we live even today. He worked here until his death on October 18, 1931, at the age of 84.

    Let’s Experiment with fascinating power source of CITRUS FRUITS…

    WHAT DO WE NEED ?

    Citrus fruits such as lemons, limes or oranges, Copper nails (2 inches in length,) Zinc nail (2 inches in length), Small coloured light bulb / LED light, Electrical tape / alligator clips, Micro ammeter (to measure the electric current in a circuit)

    LET’S GET STARTED..

    1. Soften the fruit by squeezing it on all sides with your hands carefully without breaking its skin so that the juice inside is flowing.
    2. Insert the nails into the fruit in a way that the sharp tips of the nails should be in the center of the fruit and not touching one another. Do not pierce the nail through the opposite end of fruit.
    3. Peel off the insulation around the bulb wires to expose the wire beneath and wrap the exposed wire around the nails.
    4. Wrap the exposed wire around the zinc nail. Use some electrical tape or clips to keep it attached. 5. And now as you wrap the other end of the wire around the copper nail, you will see the bulb light up!

    WHAT DO WE SEE ?

    The zinc nail being an active metal, reacts with the acid in the citrus fruit. The positively charged ions are the active ingredient in the fruit. The electrons transfer between the zinc nail and the acid from the fruit. The nails act as poles of the battery where one is positive while the other is negative. Electrons travel from the positive pole to the negative pole through the light bulb, which acts as a conductor. This generates enough electricity to complete the circuit and light the bulb.
