    How to select a business idea?

    Identifying a successful business idea for a start-up venture may require budding entrepreneurs

    to harness their creative energies, leverage their hands-on experiences/skills and turn their passion intoa profession. Here’s how you can do it…

    Call it an after-effect of the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Start-up India’ campaigns or the rise of a new breed of app-based techpreneur teens who have easy access to digital online tools, entrepreneurship seems to have caught the fancy of many-a-school and college going youth. Setting breaks on the post- colonial euphoria of chasing government and high-profile corporate jobs, youth look to be at home discussing entrepreneurial issues, market dynamics, business opportunities and the challenges accompanying it.

    So also, B-schools and engineering colleges across the country are witnessing rising incidents of

    students opting out of the placement routines, at times even turning down hi-profile/high-paying job offers, only to pursue their deep inner entrepreneurial calling. In schools and colleges, ‘entrepreneurship’ is the new buzzword!

    Business Plan

    Now for all those youngsters who have already decided to be an entrepreneur and are guessing as to

    what goes on to make businesses successful, whether it’s a right product, a smart business plan,

    adequate finances, a team of sharp and committed staff, world-wide digital footprints…, don’t be

    surprised if you ever hear management gurus emphasis on selection of a ‘right business idea’. It may set the alarm bells ringing for most people who are seriously considering to start a business based on one of the two personal biases:

     

    -It’s a business I am already aware of: “I love food and know all about it, so I should start a

    restaurant,” if you feel so, better think again. Just because you are a foodie or a good chef doesn’t

    necessarily mean that you would successfully run a restaurant. Choosing to do so, could be a huge

    mistake!

     

    -It’s a product/service I am in love with: Again, just because you like the product or services,

    doesn’t necessarily make it profitable. Especially, first-time entrepreneurs ought to be conscious of

    the fact that running a business is a tough ask, and that things could become all the more difficult if

    one gets passionately attached with the product/service.

     

    Steps to Entrepreneurship

    So how does one really go about selecting a business idea that in the long-run would not only be

    profitable, but also yield rich dividends on scaling it up? Here’s a step-by-step approach to do so:

    1. Picking up an idea: Look for something business that fits your passion, life goals, personal

    strengths, real-life experiences… While you do so, look at it as a possible business idea, and don’t

    fall in love with it just yet.

    1. Think 3600 : Evaluate the business idea as an investor would otherwise do. How big is the

    opportunity? Is the timing right? What will it take to execute it? Do you have adequate finances?

    What are the risks involved? Is the product/service marketable? How long would it take to make the

    venture profitable?

    1. Get Feedback: Always be conscious of the fact that the selected business idea is your baby, and

    it’s your gut feeling that it will work fine. Playing it safe, look for people who know the market, who

    understands the business model, competition, market dynamics… and try getting first-hand

    feedback on your business idea. Also try talking to some of the probable customers as to: whether

    they would buy it? If so, at what cost? What value additions they would like? How much would they

    be ready to pay for it? and so on.

    1. Business Plan: You should have a well thought out ‘Business Plan’ in hand prior to launch of the

    business. Try incorporating all your recent learnings, opinions of business experts, feedback of

    probable customers, learnings from market research, financial plan, marketing tools and their

    usage… Importantly, the business plan ought to be implementable, and it should have clearly set

    goals and target month-wise and year-wise.

    1. Develop a prototype: its high-time you have a market-ready product/service in place. Thereafter,

    consider a soft launch or pilot run of the product/service to plan to launch, just prior to the final

    business launch. Keep the ultimate vision and business goals in mind, and look out for feelers

    during the trial runs as to how you can achieve it.

    1. Test the waters: During this phase try to engage with your future customers and suppliers to figure

    out how to match your offerings with customer needs. To do that, test elements like pricing,

    branding, product/service features, customer experience, marketing strategy, etc. Measure the

    results and draw conclusions.

    1. Make necessary adjustments: Once you have gathered wealth of information on your

    product/service, market challenges, customers, competition, etc., try figuring out as to what things

    you got wrong and promptly fix them. The process may warrant making small or significant changes

    to your proposed product/service or business plan, ensure that necessary corrective steps are

    taken to prevent any future eventualities.

     

    Having undergone the above mentioned process, you can be rest assured that your

    selected business idea is ready for a formal market launch.

The younger generation is tech savvy and most of them are on their laptops or mobile for a sizable time of the day. But just being computer savvy or getting carried away by the viral topics does not lead to the right career. However, the new age terminologies are mere words and getting carried away does not lead the youth to a proper career path.

    Understand the Basics

    For a career in science in the new age technologies, the basic is understanding pure science. In school curriculum the depth of science subject increases from secondary level.Ahost of new topics are included in the syllabus. Studying these topics and get high score is the trend today as only the marks are taken into consideration for getting admission to a science career. 

    However, to get the coveted career only the good scoresare not enough. In depth basics is required which will in term lead to understand the applications and later the new technologies. In most of the curricular teaching, emphasis is not given on understanding the basics. To understand the applied aspects the in depth knowledge of theory with its applications is very essential. The very aspect is neglected as teachers and parents are happy with the high scores.

    Introspect
    Let us see some examples of theory and its application in the day to day life.

    Potable water is the need of the life for every person.Tap water, mineral water from the sealed bottles, simple water purifier, high quality RO water purifier, distilled water, original mountain sealed water are the options available in the market. If the students are asked to explain the difference & logic behind each of them,rarely students are able to explain as the applications of technology are not taught in the curriculum.

    Another simple example is about the milk and dairy products.The dairy products like Buffalo milk, Cow milk, Whole milk,Toned milk, Curd, Yogurt, Cheese, Paneer are in use daily. The students are unable to tell thedifference between milkproducts and how milkis converted into different forms. This happens because the applications are neglected in teaching process

    Take the most simple things in the day to day activity like making Omelette, Boiling eggs, Preparing Tea, making filter Coffeeetc, and if the simple question is asked about the activity to students as to Tell the exact temperature and time required to get hard boiled eggs or why omelette pan is prefered than a steel metal?When to pour tea powder into the water and why? Weather the sugar is to be added into the water or in cup?Really speaking each action mentioned above is related to practical sciencebut the very aspect is missing in teaching as the emphasis on the practicals in not given

    The utmost fascination of the younger generation is dreaming to be an astronaut and the attraction towards astronomy, astrophysics and being curious about rocket science is seen. The students aspire to crack JEE, however if asked simple question like what is light year, parsec measurements, simple terms like escape velocity most of the students are not aware and understand these terms.

    Be Practical

    These are the few examples which I come across about the career aspiration with so many students.There are always exceptions, but to learn advance science practical aspect, understanding the applications is more important. Always think of applying the theory to what you see around.If you don’t find exact answers be curious to find it. The mere words of fascinating technologies are not the career but understanding the basicsand further knowing the applications is the key to learning modern science..

    The Temperatures in India have recorded the highest ever mercury Levels. This season since midFeb till the date strange phenomenon are seen. On one hand it is hot in some regions on the other it is raining hailstorms in other places

    It is a heat wave like situation and the mercury rising high to the level that few Indian cities are recording highest temperatures in the world. An extreme summer is forecasted on the cards for India as 36 weather stations in cities across the country recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius. Several cities are recording very high temperatures like Gandhinagar in Gujrat, Thane in Maharashtra, Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh. The temperatures are predicted to climb still further. The extreme weather is attributed to the El Nino situations in the weather pattern.

    A new study from researchers at the University of Cambridge has included a “heat index” to measure the recurring impacts of Indian heatwaves on the country’s population. Heatwaves fuelled by climate change leads to public health issues, food shortages and increased risks of death.

    Study has shown that India’s global ranking according to the United Nations Sustainable Development Group has gone down in the last 20 years because it hasn’t met the goals for 11 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.The research findings further indicate that every one-degree rise in the temperature would lower the GDP by two percent

    First 3D-printed rocket fails

    A rocket made almost entirely of 3D-printed parts made its launch debut recently, lifting off amid fanfare but failing three minutes into flight — far short of orbit. Though the it failed to reach orbit, the launch proved that the rocket—whose mass is 85 percent 3D-printed—could withstand the rigors of lift-off. The successful launch came on the third attempt. The rocket was 110 feet (33.5 meters) tall with a diameter of 7.5 feet (2.2 meters). Eighty-five percent of its mass was 3D-printed with metal alloys, including the nine Aeon 1 engines used in its first stage and the one Aeon Vacuum engine employed in the second. It is the largest ever 3D-printed object and was made using the world’s largest 3D metal printers, according to the Long Beach-based company.

    Astronomers discover helium-burning white dwarf

    Astronomers studying stellar evolution have stumbled on an unexpected discovery: a new type of star that seems to break the mold of star formation. Most stars have surfaces made up of hydrogen and helium, but these new stars observed by German astronomers are covered in carbon and oxygen, the ashes left over from helium fusion, something a press release called “an exotic composition for a star.” While carbon and oxygen can be brought to the surface by a sudden, brief resurgence of explosive helium fusion, our current understanding of that process doesn’t work for these new stars. That’s because the size and temperature of these new stars indicates that helium is still burning steadily at the core, said scientists.

    Large asteroid passes between Earth and Moon
    The asteroid, named 2023 DZ2, estimated to be 40 to 70 meters (130 to 230 feet) wide, roughly the size of the Parthenon, and big enough to wipe out a large city if it hit our planet. It came within a third of the distance from the Earth to the Moon, said Richard Moissl, the head of the ESA’s planetary defence office. Though that is “very close”, there is nothing to worry about.
    Small asteroids fly past every day, but one of this size coming so close to Earth only happens around once every 10 years. The asteroid will pass 175,000 kilometers (109,000 miles) from Earth at a speed of 28,000 kilometers per hour (17,400 miles per hour). The moon is roughly 385,000 kilometers away. An observatory in La Palma, one of Spain’s Canary Islands, first spotted the asteroid on February 27.

    Oldest sea reptile found on Arctic island

    A team of Swedish and Norwegian palaeontologists has discovered remains of the earliest known ichthyosaur (fish-lizard) on the remote Arctic island of Spitsbergen. Ichthyosaurs are an extinct group of marine reptiles whose fossils have been recovered worldwide. They were among the first land living animals to adapt to life in the open sea, and evolved a fish-like body shape similar to modern whales. Ichthyosaurs were at the top of the food chain in the oceans while dinosaurs roamed the land, and dominated marine habitats for over 160 million years.

    Webb captures rarely seen prelude to a supernova

    The rare sight of a Wolf-Rayet star—among the most luminous —was one of the first observations made by the James Webb Space Telescope. The star is 15,000 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius. A Wolf-Rayet star is a rare prelude to the famous final act of a massive star: the supernova. The James Webb Space Telescope captured in unprecedented detail – A distinctive halo of gas and dust frames the star and glows in the infrared light, displaying knotty structure and a history of episodic ejections.

    Despite being the scene of an impending stellar “death,” astronomers also look to Wolf-Rayet stars for insight into new beginnings. Cosmic dust is forming in the turbulent nebulas surrounding these stars, dust that is composed of the heavy-element building blocks of the modern universe, including life on Earth.

    Venus: Proof of active volcanoes – at last

    Venus is almost the same size, mass and density as Earth. So it should be generating heat in its interior at much the same rate as the Earth does. On Earth, one of the main ways in which this heat leaks out is via volcanic eruptions. During an average year, at least 50 volcanoes erupt. But despite decades of looking, we’ve not seen clear signs of volcanic eruptions on Venus—until now.

    A new study by geophysicist Robert Herrick of the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, has at last caught one of the planet’s volcanoes in the act. Now, Venus’s surface has a dense atmosphere – an unbroken cloud layer at a height of 45-65km that is opaque to most wavelengths of radiation, including visible light. A technique known as aperture synthesis was used to build up an image of the surface. The resulting image looks rather like a black and white photograph, except that the brighter areas usually correspond to rougher surfaces and the darker areas to smoother surfaces.

    New ‘camera’ with shutter speed of 1 trillionth of a second

    Understanding ‘dynamic disorder’ in materials could lead to more energy-efficient thermoelectric devices, and also to better recovery of useful energy from waste heat by converting it directly to electricity. When materials function inside an operating device, parts of the material respond and change in amazing and unexpected ways. This dynamic disorder is difficult to study because the clusters are not only so small and disordered, but they also fluctuate in time.

    Until now, it has been impossible to see the relevant dynamic disorder from the background of less relevant static disorder. Researchers at Columbia Engineering and Université de Bourgogne have developed a new “camera” with incredibly fast shutter speed of around 1 picosecond. It can see the local disorder. Its key feature is a variable shutter speed. The new method, which they call variable shutter PDF or vsPDF, doesn’t work like a conventional camera—it uses neutrons from a source to measure atomic positions with a shutter speed of around one picosecond, or a million million (a trillion) times faster than normal camera shutters.

    Newly discovered enzyme turns air into electricity  

    Australian scientists have discovered an enzyme that converts air into energy. The finding reveals that this enzyme uses the low amounts of the hydrogen in the atmosphere to create an electrical current. This finding opens the way to create devices that literally make energy from thin air. Recent work by the team has shown that many bacteria use hydrogen from the atmosphere as an energy source in nutrient-poor environments. The researchers extracted the enzyme responsible for using atmospheric hydrogen from a bacterium called Mycobacterium smegmatis. They showed that this enzyme, called Huc, turns hydrogen gas into an electrical current.

    Purifying water with just a few atoms

    Scientists are now exploring the use of nanotechnology to purify water in a new and innovative way. Researchers are focusing on using just a few atoms to remove impurities and contaminants from water. By creating small sensors that can detect specific pollutants, scientists can create materials that effectively remove them from water. This process is known as nanotechnology-enabled water treatment, and it has the potential to revolutionize the way we purify water. One example of this technology in action is the use of graphene-based filters. Graphene is a one-atom-thick material that is incredibly strong and conductive. By creating filters out of graphene, scientists have been able to remove impurities from water with extreme efficiency. The filters are also incredibly durable and long-lasting, making them an ideal solution for areas with limited access to clean water.

    Astronomers discover metal-rich galaxy in early universe

    Scanning the first images of a well-known early galaxy taken by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), Cornell astronomers were intrigued to see a blob of light near its outer edge. A deeper dive into the early JWST data released found the galaxy to be super-chemically abundant. The JWST has opened new venues to study how stars and galaxies formed in the early universe. The “Discovery of a Dusty, Chemically Mature Companion to z~4 Starburst Galaxy in JWST” was published Feb. 17 in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, with eight co-authors who are current or former members of the Department of Astronomy in the College of Arts and Sciences.     Chat GPT is launched on 30th November last year developed by OpenAI

    Chat GPT is Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer… It is a Chatbot developed by OpenAI built on GPT family of large language models. ChatGPT is the latest step in OpenAI’s iterative deployment of increasingly safe and useful AI systems. ChatGPT is fine-tuned from a model in the GPT series  ChatGPT trained on an Azure AI supercomputing infrastructure.

    This model is developed using Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF). It incorporates the user and an AI assistant. This new dialogue dataset is mixed with the Instruct GPT dataset which is converted into a Dialogue format the CHAT GPT.

    This AI tool is released just in November…  Considered as Future of AI and the direction it is going…  but there is huge uproar.. fearing it would take over human Intelligence or mar the creativity…

    Questions arises as to whether Chat GPT has limitations… is it reliable…

    ChatGPT has multiple limitations. Its uneven factual accuracy, however, has been identified as a significant drawback…

    CHAT GPT can generate the answers for all school led curricular questions but can it solve CAT or JEE papers is the questions… Considered as a challenge to teaching learning.. World over many schools are blocking Chat GPT network.. Many Schools world over are banning the use of ChatGPT… stating that the results generated by ChatGPT are not logical 

    Human or AI

    The quick and instant answers is perceived as threat to human creativity and critical thinking…

    There are other drawback which are coming forth as may be the wisdom of Chat GPT is powered by the existing web knowledge resources likely yield a lot of false positives and negatives… ChatGPT is said to lacks ethics and can’t currently rank sites for reliability, quality, or trustworthiness.

    Even if in school or public the use of GPT is banned but people will still be able to access it through the personal networks

    But whether it can take up and challenge human intellect is a big question
